The healthcare pathway is for students wishing to pursue a career in the Healthcare Industry. The course will enable students to receive initial exposure to Healthcare Science skills and attitudes applicable to the healthcare industry. The concepts of health, wellness, and preventative care are evaluated, and the ethical and legal responsibilities of today’s healthcare provider. Fundamental healthcare skills development is initiated, including medical terminology, microbiology, and basic life support. Students must meet both national and intrastate professional guidelines as designated by applicable regulatory agencies such as the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Students who pursue the healthcare pathways can participate in internship positions, Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), and Phlebotomy programs. The certificate programs allow students to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation. Students who complete the healthcare pathway are well-prepared for the workforce and have a competitive advantage when applying to post-secondary health career programs.
Patient Care fundamentals/CNAs provide basic bedside care to patients in nursing homes, residential healthcare facilities, and hospitals. They perform many routine duties, offering direct care for the patient under the supervision of the physicians or nursing staff. Some specific duties include helping patients dress, eat, groom, or bathe. They may serve meals, make beds, or assist patients as they escort them to examining rooms. Additionally they may check some vitals, such as temperature, pulse, blood pressure, or may observe their physical condition and report any problems to the nurses. While the job is less advanced than that of a registered nurse, their work is invaluable in helping provide individual care, and they often have more one-on-one contact with the patients than other medical staff. Students who successfully complete this class and clinical can sit for a state exam and begin working immediately upon receiving certification.
The Allied Health pathway is designed to offer students the opportunity to become effective and efficient multi-skilled healthcare providers as they develop a working knowledge of various allied health opportunities. Students gain knowledge in allied health careers such as respiratory, radiology, surgery, pharmacy, rehabilitation, cardiology, emergency medicine, mental and public health, and dentistry.
The Phlebotomy pathway is designed to help students become prepared for the phlebotomy technician certification exam, upon completion of all required components. Topics covered in this course include employability skills, careers, terminology and equipment, safety and compliance, quality assurance, site-specific anatomy, patient preparation for venipuncture, performing venipuncture, and special processing and transport. During this course, simulated venipuncture may be performed. However, for national certification, live sticks are required. The pre-requisites for this course are Introduction to Healthcare and Essentials of Healthcare.
The Clinical Certified Medical Assistant program provides knowledge and skills preparing students for a career as a CCMA or helps students further their education in the Health Science field. This is a certificate program allowing students to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation. Students who complete the healthcare pathway are well-prepared for the workforce and have a competitive advantage when applying to post-secondary health career programs.
